Weird places to see mammals.
Good morning, night, afternoon or evening mammal watching community. I have a somewhat odd question to ask you. What well known mammals have you spotted in places that would be considered weird for you to spot the species. For example I got to go elk viewing near the Virginian Kentucky border despite elk being more commonly seen along the west coast. If you could add photos to your responses that would be very much appreciated.

As the original post says, the wilderness areas of the western US are famous for animals, rather than the much more densely populated eastern seaboard. But that doesn’t mean you need to only look in the west! I went to Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge https://www.fws.gov/refuge/alligator-river in North Carolina to see the red wolf (quite successfully), which is the only place they still exist in the wild. What I found surprising was that in addition to the wolves we saw 4-5 black bear sightings each day (over 3 day period), including mothers with cubs, and close up encounter with a beautiful male which I estimate at being about 300 lbs – huge for a black bear. I was shocked to see so many bears on the eastern seaboard. Another mammal watcher I met there said that if I really wanted to see black bear, I should go to the Pungo unit of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge https://www.fws.gov/refuge/pocosin-lakes/visit-us/locations/pungo-unit, which he claimed was even better.
