Update: Southern Flying squirrel Washington DC

Given that the posts on Southern Flying squirrel in the Long Branch reserve near Washington DC are quite old, here a quick update: staff at the visitors centre mentioned that the number of Southern Flying squirrels have gone down substantially since Barred Owls settled in the area. Yet, the feeding programme continues (during winter months, supposedly till March), and Squirrels do turn up pretty much each night.

When we visited in the last week of February we saw one individual, approximately 45 minutes after dusk.

We were told the park closes for visitors after dark, and formally the only option to watch the squirrels is during formal excursions that are organised every so often. Yet, our decision to linger at the deck for a bit paid off, and we were treated with excellent views of a very confiding individual!
