Trip Reports – Pygmy Hippo Expedition – Royle Safaris – May 2024

In May 2024 Royle Safaris took another small group out into the wonderful rainforest ecosystem of Tai National Park in Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) on our annual Pygmy Hippo Expedition. This was the second trip in succession which was successful in sightings of Pygmy Hippos (unfortunately they were night time sightings and so we didnt get any pics). Which is a great success rate for this incredible and elusive African mammal.

As well as these pygmy hippo sightings we had sightings of 33 species of mammals including some rarely seen species such as water chevrotain, African brush-tailed porcupines, red-river hogs, Johnston’s genet and some great primates (11 species of primates) Diana monkey, king colobus, Bosman’s poto, olive colobus and chimps. Many of these species are now very reliably seen on our trips here and we hope to continue seeing them on future trips.

We have places available on our 2025 Pygmy Hippo Expedition and anyone interested in this please contact us on info@royle-safaris.co.uk and we will get back to you and answer any questions you may have.

Do you have any extra photos of those Beecroft Anomalures? Preferably where the tail is visible. They look a bit off for Beecroft, and it would be good to rule out Lesser or very pale Derby’s

Agreed, with the quite small tails I’m thinking Dwarf (Lesser) Anomalure.

Thanks Venkat. I don’t think there are other photos. I admittedly did not look too closely at A. pusillus as an option as the distribution map I had in the field didn’t indicate it was an option there. But I agree it’s more likely now looking at it again.
