Trip Report – Western Long-beaked Echidna and other mammals in West Papua and the Moluccas – Oct 23_V2

We had the great fortune to have a night’s spotlighting near Sorong in West Papua prior to a boat-based bird-watching trip around Raja Ampat and the central Moluccas.  15 species were identified, the highlight being a Western Long-beaked Echidna.

Good stuff! Just a comment on the flying foxes from the Moluccas. If they were active at daytime, they were 99% sure Black-bearded Flying Foxes. S Moluccan Flying Fox is the one you see on Obi, where it is extremely common

Great report John – thanks for taking the time to write it and help encourage others to visit Klalik. Very glad there were no leach complications too … yikes.

I’m planning to be in West Papua in December of this year. Can you please share Absalom’s contact information? Thanks!

Hi Sahriar. We did all our communications with Absalom through Facebook / Messenger. Search out his name, do a Friend Request and then start your request in Messenger. 12 months ago when we were communicating he was in the field a bit and replies sometimes took awhile. Also I noticed that in my phone I have the following number but I haven’t ever used it: Dominggus Absalom Kalamai +62 813 43059476
