Trip Report – West Papau’s Endemic Mammals – Royle Safaris – May-June 2024

In the spring of 2024 Royle Safaris followed in the footsteps of Jon Hall and embarked on the first dedicated group mammalwatching tour to West Papua, guided by Carlos Bocos and with Martin Royle escorting the trip was very successful with 47 species of mammals seen including all of our major targets such as Grizzled and Ursine Tree Kangaroos, Western Long-beaked Echidna and Long-fingered Triok.

We also had a Juliana Senawi join us for a portion of the trip and help capture many species of bats, including a currently undescribed species which is due to be described soon.

As well as the bounty of mammals we had some great bird species and reptiles including many birds of paradise and some wonderful pythons!

We are planning our next mammalwatching trip to West Papua in 2026, dates to be confirmed soon, for anyone interested please contact us on info@royle-safaris.co.uk
