Tips for whale watching in Gulf of St Lawrence
Looking for recommendations for WHALE WATCHING sites and operators in the GULF OF ST LAWRENCE in the END OF JULY. I will have time to visit two different spots for whale watching. I’m thinking the Tadoussac area for one and the Gaspé area for the second. Bay of Fundy used to be the place for northern right whale, but I’ve seen reports that the number of observations has declined dramatically here. Below is a map from Whalemap.org of northern right whale records in the period 16/7-15/8, 2024 which are focused around the mouth of Chaleur Bay and Anticosti Island. I realise that it’s likely a little too early for northern right whale and blue whale, but you never know. A big aim is beluga, though. All tips will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mogens. The best spot I have found in that area is Les Bergeronnes, past Tadoussac. Beluga should be guaranteed. I have seen Blue Whale there, but later in the season is better for them. There is a national park site at Cap-de-Bon-Desir where you can take a camp chair and sit on the rocky headland watching the marine mammals just off shore. Nearby are two campgrounds, Bon Desir and Paradis Marin. You can see whales from your campsite at either, mostly Humpbacks and Minke Whales, although other species are possible. For the Gaspe site, whale watching tours depart from the south side of Forillion National Park and can be quite good. I have seen Fin Whale there once, as well as the more common species. Happy to discuss any questions you may have. It’s a great area. You can reach me at ibtson@yahoo.com.
