The Weekly Recap

Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!

The first trip report of the week was this literally unbelievable one from La Engañosa by Karina and Andrey, during which they saw a swarm of Greater Fairy Armadillos, the Long-eared Armadillo and even a Horned Armadillo. The photos are so crisp they don’t look real, especially the one of the infamous La Enganosa primate taken by their guide’s father a long time ago. Just don’t go booking your trips to this place anytime soon, who knows where you’ll end up…

Next up was Zhou Fangyi’s short trip to Loango NP, Gabon during which he saw a family of Western Lowland Gorilla, a Large-spotted Genet (maybe? See this post), a Cyclops Roundleaf Bat and many other cool species.

This report from Venkat Sankar of his accidental Californian big mammal year (2024) with Nicole Haseley is super impressive: they saw 150 species, which equates to 70% of California’s total, including highlights like the Montane Shrew, Mountain Lion and Mojave Ground Squirrel. If you’d like to hear more about this impressive feat, then check out the newest episode of the Mammalwatching Podcast, an interview of the two!

Warren Gilson’s trip to New Zealand’s South Island saw the beautiful Hector’s Dolphin, New Zealand Fur Seals, Dusky Dolphins and even the fascinatingly-named Brown Rat.

An overnight trip to Carrizo Plain, California was pretty prolific, with 4 mammal species (2 lifers), 1 herp and 16 (if I counted right) birds!

Last but not least is Charles Foley’s short report of Iberian Lynx watching in Andujar in which he gives a few useful updates on lynx watching in the area. If you’re interested in seeing this species, and specifically in photographing it, then check out this post from Jo Dale who is planning a trip in June for that purpose and is looking for others to join.

And if you are looking for a trip to join next February, her and her friend are also travelling to India (Tadoba and Gujarat) with targets like Dhole and Striped Hyena, Asiatic Lion and Sloth Bear.

Finally, John Van Niel would love some advice on which tour operator to choose for a trip to Chitwan NP, Nepal around Christmas.
