The Weekly Recap
Hello and welcome back to the weekly recap!
The week started off with Chris Daniels’ trip report from Sichuan and Qinghai, China, some highlights of which were Golden Snub-nosed Monkeys, Chinese Mountain Cat, Snow Leopard and Eurasian Lynx. He also saw tons of ridiculously fluffy mammals like the Plateau Pika (very rudely accused of deriving its value purely from being food 😤) and Tibetan Fox.
Ed Stubbs has shared a short report of a few cool species in Taiwan, snuck into a birding trip: Taiwan Red-and-white Giant Flying Squirrels, Formosan Rock Macaques, and Pallas Squirrel, to name a few.
Finally, Pieter van Eijk has reuploaded a trip report from Panama from a few months ago, which gives a good site for seeing Cacomistle in La Fortuna. He will also be travelling to Sabah, Borneo in April and is wondering if anyone would be interested in joining!
Daniel Dahan and Matthew Steer have created some “Cartoons for Conservation”, a simple guide to help local guides understand ethical mammalwatching despite language barriers. I think they’re brilliant, although personally I would’ve added a few simple frame such as “don’t have children” and “exterminate birders”.
Apparently the numbers of Southern Flying Squirrels, known for being easy to see in a reserve near Washington DC, have decreased quite a bit, so now is probably as good a time as any to go see them if they’re not on your list!
As always, a few mammalwatchers would like some advice on how to make upcoming trips even more… special. This post is about Northern Argentina, this one is about Dhofar, Oman, this one is about finding Siamangs in Bukit Tinggi, Malaysia and this one is about where to see Giant Otter Shrews.
If you’ve ever visited Desert National Park in Rajasthan, India, this post has a few questions about its status.
Finally, Janos Olah is asking for help identifying a couple Pikas seen in Ladakh – either Plateau or Ladakh Pika?
