The Weekly Recap

Hello, welcome to this week’s recap!

The first trip report of the week was my dad’s, from his recent trip to Kaeng Krachan NP, Thailand. As he has proudly told me at least 3 times (if he mentions it a fourth I’ll have to give him a lollipop), many people he bumped into there knew of him and the website. It would seem like the disease has truly spread out of control. Maybe it’s a good thing after all that such a strong immunity has been pummelled into me… Stay safe. But in all seriousness it is pretty cool that mammalwatching seems to be catching on so much (even if only so my childhood seems less odd to people). Anyway, some highlights from the trip were Robinson’s Banded Langur, cool bats, some superb Sun Bear encounters and a video of a Black Leopard which has gone viral in the Bangkok Post!

The next trip was Michael Johnson in Panama: he saw 29 species there including Water Opposum, Night Monkeys and Northern Tamandua.

Ben W.’s trip to Tasmania in late December (just after I was there!) was even more fruitful than ours (thank God), with 16 species such as Platypus, Spotted-tail Quoll, and Australian Fur Seals.

Enigmatic Wildlife Tour’s recent trip to Madagascar saw 48 species including Madagascar Flying Fox and Ring-tailed Vontsira. Check out the report for some great photos and more information!

This sweet post from Bob Shipbaugh about his recent trip to China mentions how wonderful the people he travelled with and the sightings were. Seeing as those people include my father I am quite surprised, but I suppose even Ted Bundy was a charmer.

A couple mammalwatchers are looking for some people to join a 2 week trip to Gunung Leuser NP, Sumatra in August – more information here.

A couple of South-East Asian squirrels have been split – Grey Bellied and Himalayan Striped. Check out the post for more details – with some luck you’ll get a new species on your list!

If you have any good Portuguese guide recommendations, comment them here. Similarly, if you know of any good Chinese tour companies for a springtime trip to Sichuan and Tibet (or if you’d be interested in joining such a trip), comment here.

Skyler Palatnik going to Costa Rica for the first time would love some advice on where to find species like Kinkajou, Three-toad Sloth, Tamandua, and Jaguarundi near Arenal. He would also like to know where to see some good herps if anyone has any knowledge on that too.

Also, Mogens Trolle is asking for some tips on whale watching in the the Gulf of Saint Laurence in July.

Xeno-canto – a wildlife sound sharing website – has finally opened up to land mammals, so go upload all of your best squeaks and grunts. I wonder what would happen if I posted a recording of my dad snoring. It would probably say something like “this website is not designed to measure earthquake magnitudes”.

And finally, Sebastian Kennerknecht is selling a pair of night vision binos for 400 USD here if anyone is interested.
