The Weekly Recap
Hello everyone and welcome back to the weekly recap!
This week’s first report is from Klil and Assaf Zaitlin’s trip to Uganda, where they saw a whopping 52 species in only 10 days, despite it being just a “family trip” (I know how those go). They saw some great species such as a Serval, Eastern Mountain Gorillas, Chimpanzees and Thomas’ Dwarf Galago and all the pictures are gorgeous!
Next is Ellen Linton’s report from the Farallon Islands and Point Reyes with some great pelagic watching – she saw Northern Fur Seals, Blue Whales, Northern Right Whale Dolphins, North American River Otter, a Puma and 19 more cool species, half of which were lifers. I’m surprised my father hasn’t started telling me how he wishes Ellen Linton were his daughter instead, but I’m sure it won’t be long. At least maybe I’ll finally be able to get adopted.
The next report is this Cat Expeditions Manul of Mongolia tour, which saw three different families of Pallas’ Cat and observed some amazing behaviours. The report is full of pictures of adorable fluffy Pallas’ kittens, so it’s definitely worth a read!
Last but not least, this report from Way Kambas NP, Sumatra by Bennett Gardner features 30 species seen in just 4 days (despite also looking for birds… tut tut tut) including the Sun Bear, Sunda Leopard Cat and Sunda Slow Loris. The report is very detailed and again full of beautiful photos, so definitely check it out.
Tomer Ben-Yehuda is planning two mega mammal trips – Bolivia (September 2025), for Bolivian River Dolphins, Jaguarundi and Geoffroy’s Cat, and Colombia (January 2026) focused on the Andes and looking for Mountain Tapirs, Water Opossum and Andean Bears. If you would like to window shop for some other “fun” mammal trips, then why not check out the join a trip page. Why not also check out your closest addiction help centre while you’re at it.
It’s that time of the month when a new episode of the Mammalwatching Podcast has been released! This time it’s an interview with Coke Smith and Jirayu Ekkul from Thailand. I haven’t actually listened to this one yet, but I went on a mammal trip with both of them back in 2017 and even I had a lot of fun (despite the copious amount of leeches and my brother’s attempts to decorate me with them), so I’m sure it’s a great listen!
If you have any insider info on where to see Belugas or any other good species around Quebec City in late autumn/winter, comment here. This post is Jean-Michel asking for some help identifying a Namibian rodent seen last month in Sesriem (about the size of a Harvest Mouse), so check it out if have any ideas. And this post is asking for some thermal scope advice (Xinfrared T2 pro or HX09?).
Finally, Shavez Cheema from 1StopBorneoWildlife has released a free travel guide to Borneo!
