Tasmania 2024/2025
Hi all, this a trip report for a recent visit to Tasmania I did with my family between the 28th of December and the 9th of January. I saw 16 native mammal species, as well as hearing Tasmanian devils.

Hi Craig,
Thanks. Yes, DFTD is responsible for the decline. According to Len ‘they all’ have the disease, though I’m not sure how literally he meant it since looking at his camera traps only one one (of 3) had obvious tumours. Apparently the northwestern devils started getting it a few years ago and now the only population without it is the isolated one on Robbins Island (excluding the introduced tassie devils at Maria Island).

Interesting to see your comments about Tassie devils at Loongana. We went there in January 2022, so 3 years ago (as of January 2025). We heard the devils and then saw two or three of them (and a spotted tailed quoll) after Len had thrown out the raw chicken wings. About midnight this was. Why has the North West population crashed, I wonder? The facial tumour disease? We actually saw another wild devil by the side of the road one night near Cradle Mountain on that same trip, and it had DFTD.
