Black bears are reliable-ish around Crescent Meadow trail complex daily in early June. Sometimes you see one five minutes after you set out, and other times it might take several hours and several miles. Marmots are there too. (And northern goshawks and pileated woodpeckers.) The access road to the meadow trailhead is sometimes closed by the Park Service on weekends when visitor count passes an unknown value for “x”; midweek and after hours it seems always to be open. Moro Rock is where the last verified grizzly bear was seen in California, 1924. / Charles Hood
