RFI: Weekend Trip from Bangkok, February ’25

Hi all,

My wife and I are looking for recommendations for a two-day trip near Bangkok in early February. We would depart BKK on a Friday night and return Sunday night. The obvious choices seem to be Khao Yai or Kaeng Krachan, and I’ve read many trip reports for both but can’t tell a) if Kaeng Krachan is really feasible in the limited time we have and b) if Khao Yai will be totally swamped with travelers on the weekend. We are open to suggestions for other destinations within a ~4 hour drive from Bangkok too. Also seeking any recommendations for accommodation or guides.

We have particular interest in primates, cats, viverrids (especially Binturong), Dhole, Sun Bear, and Gaur. My wife might best be described as “mammal watching adjacent,” so we won’t be focused on bats or “anything smaller than a squirrel,” she says.

TIA for any help you can provide!

I think Kaeng Krachan is your best option, staying there or at Baan Maka lodge nearby; Khao Yai will likely be very busy on the weekend. Baan Maka can arrange transport from Bangkok if needed.

Thanks, Paul! Appreciate the input. I think we’ve settled on Kaeng Krachan, even if it may feel a bit rushed. Unfortunately, Baan Maka is already booked solid for the weekend we’re in town, so we’ll need to find other accommodation.

I don’t remember which park, but there was a park in Bangkok where I saw several northern treeshrews walking around. I thought they were squirrels at first, but they turned out to be my first mammal from that entire order. Not sure if your wife would find them more interesting that squirrels, but worth keeping an eye out when in the city.
