RFI: Finding Hoary Bats?
Around this time of year, I enjoy looking for Red Bats roosting in beech leaves in the Eastern US. The congeneric Hoary Bats also migrate through the region. I’ve read that they also sometimes roost in the open but I’ve never found one. Does anyone have advice as to how to locate them? E.g. what types of trees and roosting locations do they prefer?
Thanks,
Ben

Here’s a nice summary, including some tips on roost preferences: https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild/species/hoary/
Note that here in the East we mostly get females.

Hi Ben,
We often detect hoary bats while they are foraging in a variety of forested habitat here in northern Ontario. See https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/species-risk-public-registry/cosewic-assessments-status-reports/hoary-bat-eastern-red-bat-silver-haired-bat-2023.html#toc7 for the recent Canadian status report for this and a couple of other listed migratory bats (silver-haired and red), which has some info on roost trees and some refs from the primary literature with more details. At least up here, roosts are difficult to find, at least without telemetry (I’ve never found one nor know anyone who has). I’d be interested in hearing about anyone who has though.
