Trip to Mongolia August 2025- looking for people to join us
Update. I didn’t get enough people. I would love to finally do this trip. Please do get in touch if you are interested. 4 people should make it considerably cheaper than joining a trip with a UK/US tour company.
Dear all
I feel that I really should do something soon about the big thing still on my ‘bucket’ list: I need to see a snow leopard. So, with that in mind, I am considering a trip to Mongolia in August 2024.
Obviously this is not a trip that can be done independently. This company have been recommended to me:
I have attached their suggested itinerary for a 14 day trip.
The main targets would be snow leopard and Pallas’s cat but it would very much be a mammal and birds trip.
I looked into prices for this year and the price was likely to be about $5000 per person in a group of 6. Plus flights would have been £1500 (apologies for the mixing of currencies).
I am literally just seeing if there is enough interest to make the trip feasible at the moment. A group of six would be fine. There are two of us plus a couple of ‘possibles’. If you are interested please send me a PM. stevebabbs500(at)gmail.com.
Cheers
Steve

I am sure that is what the web sites say. tourmongolia.com has trips November, January February. wildlifetoursmongolia.com has trips in February, March, April, Oct, November. Birdquest-tours.com has October, as does wildimages-phototours.com Just to be clear, I have no experience with any of these companies, so I am not saying that it is the best time – but those places seem to offer snow leopards in the Altai mountains of western Mongolia only in the fall or winter. There are web sites that describe snow leopard trips without giving a time of year, and some say “available year round” but the pre-scheduled trip seem to be fall or winter. Meanwhile the trips to Ladakh appear to be similar. voygr.com has trips November-April. birdquest-tours.com goes to Ladakh in March.
I want to do a trip to the Altai for snow leopard – it appears to be lower altitude and perhaps a bit closer range for photos than Ladakh, but I don’t have any real experience. Perhaps others on the list can speak with more experience and authority.

I won’t be able to join your trip, but I do want to make a similar trip at some point. Is August a good time for snow leopards and pallas cat in Mongolia? The scheduled trips seem to be in the depths of winter, with temperatures to match. Is the August a good time?
