Nice report, and great to see another person making an effort for Pacaranas in Colombia. While people certainly do see them in the Otun, Santa Rosa del Cabal, and Barbas-Bremen areas, all I can say is without knowledge of rock crevices/caves where groups of Pacaranas den (keeping in mind that they are very sensitive to disturbance), spotting one seems very much down to a huge stroke of luck. On my trip with Rob S in Aug 2022 (in the company of a local biologist who has seen them in the area), we tried for 7 nights (3 in Santa Rosa + 4 in Otun), spotlighting & thermal scoping every night for 5-6 hours. Barring a brief look at an animal that was either a Pacarana or Mountain Paca, we drew a blank. At least the density seems relatively high in this area & there’s lots of great quality habitat!

Not in Colombia but i contacted one of Pacarana’s rehabilitation centers in Peru (Reino del Machetero/Centro de conservacion ) and they told me my best shot would
Be to go to a private conservation forest called “Sacha Causay” and they gave me the contact of the coordinator who can give me permission to visit it to try to find them but i don’t know any professional wildlife guide around Peru to go give it a try and i am going myself to Bolivia in 2025 so it won’t be anytime soon that i can go there to try to find them. So if anybody has contacts there or wants to give a try please send me a message

Maybe I missed it, but I think it’s interesting to note what time of the year, as I imagine there’s some seasonality there.
