Javan primate weekend

If you are looking for a quick trip to see Java’s endemic primates then I recommend Primavestour, a small Indonesian NGO working with communities to conserve primates and other wildlife. I flew from Jakarta (6.30 am) to Semarang (central Java) and by the time I got to the hotel later that night I had seen all my primate targets (Javan gibbon, Spangled ebony langur, Javan fuscous leaf monkey and Javan slow loris). In addition, the night walk for the Javan slow loris also produced Javan flying squirrel, Red giant flying squirrel, and an unexpected Sunda leopard cat (Javan sub spp). I did repeat the night walk on the second day looking for Javan porcupine but my luck ran out. I should add that seeing all the target mammals on the first day is considered very lucky but after I dipped on Tapanuli orangutan last month, this was payback.
My guide was Imam who was very knowledgeable and an excellent spotter who works closely with community guides to encourage wildlife tourism in places where animals have been previously viewed as pests. I’m not going to give away the site info as we should be supporting this kind of local conservation projects:
