Funding for mammal research?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone is familiar how and where to apply for funding for (taxonomic) mammal research. Particularly for smaller mammals. For example, are there funds for visiting museum collections? I am familiar with funds for entomological collecting trips. I do not know if these are available for mammals as well? I am not interested in collecting mammals though, but field experience for making a field guide is always good and it would be nice.

Hopefully you have some advice for me! Since I am not affiliated with a university as a student anymore I can imagine the possibilities are limited.
