Cheesemans’ Ecology Safaris: Marine Mammal Highlights from South Georgia & Antarctic Peninsula, October 2023
South Georgia & Antarctic Peninsula Expedition: October 2023 A Mammal Watcher’s Dream Journey to the Southern Ocean
Our October 2023 expedition took us on an extraordinary voyage to two of the planet’s most remote and wildlife-rich regions: South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. Known for their exceptional concentrations of marine mammals and other unique fauna, these areas offer some of the most thrilling wildlife encounters on Earth. This journey gave us the rare opportunity to witness iconic mammal species in their natural habitats while exploring the vast, untamed wilderness of the Southern Ocean.
South Georgia: The Marine Mammal Capital of the Southern Hemisphere
Our adventure began on the rugged shores of South Georgia, a haven for marine mammals and a hotspot for mammal watchers. We were immediately greeted by vast colonies of Southern Elephant Seals and Antarctic Fur Seals, both of which dominated the island’s beaches. Southern Elephant Seals were particularly impressive, with males displaying their massive size and engaging in dramatic battles to establish dominance during the breeding season.
Our time at Right Whale Bay and Salisbury Plain gave us unparalleled opportunities to observe these marine mammals up close. Male Southern Elephant Seals—some weighing as much as 4,000 kg—were often seen bellowing and fighting, while females and pups rested nearby. On the beaches, playful Antarctic Fur Seals swam in the surf, making for entertaining and lively scenes.
South Georgia’s marine mammal populations are truly spectacular, drawing both experienced mammal watchers and first-time adventurers alike.
Highlights of South Georgia:
- Southern Elephant Seals: Witnessing breeding season behavior, from newborn pups to battling males.
- Antarctic Fur Seals: Energetic and playful, seen along the shores and swimming in the waves.
- Unique Ecosystems: Exploring one of the most concentrated areas of marine mammals in the Southern Hemisphere.
Antarctic Peninsula: An Epic Wonderland
After our unforgettable encounters in South Georgia, we sailed south to the Antarctic Peninsula, a region known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich marine life. The cold waters of the Southern Ocean were where we were treated to sightings of humpback, fin, and sei whales.
The towering icebergs and snow-capped mountains of the Lemaire Channel served as a stunning backdrop for our whale-watching adventures, reinforcing just how special the Antarctic Peninsula is for marine mammal enthusiasts. Learn more about the Antarctic Peninsula’s mammal life.
Highlights of the Antarctic Peninsula:
- Humpback Whales: Watching them feed during Zodiac cruises.
- Fin and Sei Whales: Sleek and graceful, these whales were spotted in the Southern Ocean.
