Book Review: Nature at Night, Charles Hood
Charles Hood’s latest book, Nature at Night: Discover the hidden world that comes alive after dark just landed.
You may know Charles from his many trip reports or the mammalwatching podcast. But he is also a reformed birder, a celebrated poet and talented photographer. And this book draws from all those facets.
This isn’t a field guide, nor it is a book about mammalwatching per se. This is a series of essay-style articles that cover different ecosystems, life forms and more. From migrating dotterels and dragonfiles to a bonzanza of bats and a cornucopia of cats.
And the prose is as eclectic as you might imagine from someone with Charles’s CV. In the introduction he moves between Anglo-Saxon poetry and medieval cosmology to Godzilla and Dean Martin.
It is packed with interesting facts, anecdotes and great photography, mainly from Charles and our great friend Jose Gabriel Martinez- Fonseca (Nicaragua’s answer to Steve Irwin), and weaves in tips on how to enjoy nature at night and how to find it. It is educational, entertaining and mammalwatching-inspirational. This is a book that you might want to leave lying around in the path of an inquisitive friend or family member.. Once they pick it up they be inviting themselves on your next mammalwatching adventure before you can “roamin’ in the gloamin’ ”
Nature at Night is released at the end of April. It is available now for pre-order from timberpress.com and many other places.
