Best Mammalwatching in Early October

Dear fellow mammalwatcher, this is Francesco

say you unexpectedly have a gap month between end of September and end of October and want to go on a mammalwatching trip that includes some hiking. Where would you go?

I have some preference for Tibetan plateau, the Himalayan foothills to look for the iconic wildlife there. But I would be open to other ideas as well. Is it possible to go to the valley of the cats?

The trip to leuser ecosystem that was advertised here is not happening, unfortunately.

Looking forward for your suggestions, perhaps to some trip that I can join 😊

Best regards!

If you want to pick up a few species but possibly have a unforgettable time you could go to Udzungwa mountains national park. Just went and picked up 6 new species. Or another option is Ladakh and that area. I have read the trip reports and can only dream of going myself.

Chile could be good – Torres del Paine, Chiloe and more. Even Lauca NP though you would need to be good with cold temperatures at night. Georgia could also be good (again cold in the mountains but some great wildlife including the two Tur species, Lynx etc) plus spectacular scenery (and food!).

Thank you John, good tips! Thinking about Caucasus, any (slim) chance of leopard there?

I’ll check spring in chile, didn’t think about it before. But puma and guanacos are cool. And I could look for armadillos too
