Advertising: Chiloe Island (Chile) Five Little Giants tour

I love this! My friends at Chiloe Island’s Parque Tepuhueico are taking their mammal tourism to the next level and are promoting a 5 day tour to search for the park’s “5 little giants”: Pudu, Southern River Otter, Monito Del Monte, Darwin’s Fox and Kodkod. All top quality mammals.

I was in Parque Tepuhueico last year.  The lodge, the wildlife (the area is home to at least 22 mammal species) and the food is idyllic, plus I cannot say enough good things about the people who work there.

Several mammalwatchers have visited since then and many have had luck with the Kodkod, which I missed. Surely Chiloe is the best place to find this cat.

I suspect my visit – and my mammal  … errr … ‘enthusiasm’ – helped prompt this tour.  So I hope there will be others as excited as I am at the thought of a Chile Big (little) 5 tour.

The website claims that people who join the tour will push their “passion for nature to the limit”.  I think they may be underestimating the limit of most mammalwatchers! But we will see.

Highly recommended.

Unless I’m missing something, the website does not show what the itinerary looks like. Could you provide the details?

I suggest you write to them to see if there is more detail. Though as all the species are found around the lodge I imagine the itinerary is pretty ad hoc and will depend on what you see and your priorities. There won’t be any travel between sites really so you will be looking for them all each day and night. The Pudu is very easy, and you ought to get the Monito and the Fox on the first night for example.

This is such an awesome initiative by them! I love the idea, and will have to go on one of these in the near future!

Oh, man. I already wanted to go there! And this looks like a place my better half would be happy to go.

Awesome! Given how little we saw while we were there a few years ago I wish they proposed such a tour earlier 🙂
