A few species in Java & Kalimantan (Borneo)
Going through old trips I stumbled upon some travelling I did through Bali, Java and Kalimantan. This was in july/august of 2011. I didn’t specifically go out to watch and observe mammals, but liked nature in general. So I will not write a full on trip report, but instead will share the most interesting observations.
The road taken took me from Kalimantan (Borneo) to many touristic highlights on Java and eventually to Alas Purwo, Meru Betiri, Baluran and Bromo national park.
In Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) Tanjung Puting NP was visited.
Tanjung Puting NP: Bornean Orangutan (rehablitating and wild ones) Proboscis monkey, Maroon leaf monkey, Long tailed macaque, Bornean bearded pig and bornean white bearded gibbon. Another highlight was the false gharial, which was absolutely stunning.
Alas Purwo: A lot of banteng, javan rusa, long-tailed macaque and Javan Lutung. Most interesting were the dhole and southeast asian palm civet. Dhole were seen from the observation platform, the palm civet at the accommodation. I stayed inside the park and walked to the place with all the banteng. On google maps it is called “padang savana sadengan”. Hard to miss and absolutely lovely to spend the afternoon. If you go solely for the banteng just an afternoon is enough.
Meru betiri was nice, but there was a lot of logging. Going to Sukamade beach we drove through villages. Our guide knew people from the village and talk in town was an alleged tiger sighting (july 2011). Probably a leopard, but people seemed convinced that the tiger was still surviving in those forests. Who knows.. Species included javan lutung, long tailed macaque and multiple southern red muntjac (barking deer). Southern red muntjac were found at the (old) campground. I startled them walking around in dusk and again the next morning.
