The Tiger by John Vaillant
I read a lot of natural history books. There aren’t many as good as this one. John Vaillant’s The Tiger is the story of poachers and a “vengeful” tiger in the Russian Far East. It’s a page turner but also a great exploration of the complicated conservation issues there. And if you can read this without wanting to head off to the Russian Far East to look around, you are probably on the wrong blog.
If you’re looking for something to read over the holiday season, I can’t think of a better choice. Highly recommended for all mammal watchers, naturalists and nature travelers.

We’re heading to both of those locations actually – right now we have 12 game drives combined for both parks. Our trip is 24 days but I am trying to squeeze as much in as possible (typical me…): 3 nights Rann of Kutch, 3 nights Gir, 1 night Chambal, 1 Night Verdavar, 3 nights Kanha, 3 nights Bandhavgar, 4 nights Kaziranga and a few others in transit… Wish us luck! Indeed! Great book – books like this one led me and my family on a three month expedition throughout Russia that included a stint searching for tigers! I can honestly say that this experience was without a doubt one of the highpoints in my life! A more amazing part of the world would be hard to find. Here is our travelogue for this trip:
