California Mammal Big Year & Site/ID Guides

Over 2024, Nicole Haseley and I did an “accidental” mammal big year across the US state of California. We saw 150 mammal species (~70% of the total in California) including Mountain Lion, Montane Shrew, Arizona Myotis, Fin Whale, Stephens’ Kangaroo Rat, and Mohave Ground Squirrel. Of these 150, 143 species were native to California. Really excited to finally share a report of what I think is the first effort of this kind for California!

I’ve also included 2 supplemental resources that I hope many here will appreciate:

  • A detailed log of all the trips we did over the year: http://tiny.cc/CA-Trip-Log
  • A photo-based identification guide for a variety of CA small mammals (including everyone’s favorite groups like chipmunks, kangaroo rats, and pocket mice!): http://tiny.cc/CA-Mammals-ID-Guide

For those who want to read everything in one place, here’s a link to the full set of material in google docs: http://tiny.cc/Big-Year-Summary

Well this is awesome! Very cool idea. Awesome to share as well. Never thought about a big year with mammals, but why not! Also didn’t realize we are pretty much neighbors!

Thanks for this. I’m in California a lot so this will be really helpful.
