RFI: siamangs viewing in Bukit Tinggi

Hello everyone,

I am planning to go to Bukit Tinggi looking for siamangs next August. I would love to read advices about siamangs viewing there.

In particular,

  1. Is it possible to find siamangs around Colmar Tropicale and the spa and wellness castle resort?
  1. Is there a daily feeding for siamangs at the golf club. (what time?)
  1. Is it possible to find transportations (taxis or so) between Colmar Tropicale and the golf club?

Any other information would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Jean

    Hi Jean,

While I have not been yet I am planning a very similar thing next July when my family has a layover in KL, and have done a bit of research:
    1. It seems that siamangs are present throughout the grounds, but most sightings I have heard of come from the road leading up to the japanese gardens/peacock pheasant hide. However, most reports I have seen are by birders looking for the pheasant, so that could be the reason. There are apparently also regular sightings at the golf course (as you seem to know), so that might be the best area to try, but I believe that it is really a matter of staking out a fruiting tree and/or tracking down their calls.
    2. Not sure about the feeding at the golf course; I have read one trip report (not on this site) saying there is a daily feeding. Unfortunately the author of that report didn’t actually go to the feeding, so I don’t have any details, and apart from that I haven’t been able to find anything on the subject (see report at https://www.cokesmithwildlife.com/trip-report-malaysia-2022).
    3. If you are staying overnight, there is a shuttle service between most of the attractions in the resort complex, including the golf course. If not, it should be possible to hire a taxi in KL and make a day trip, since siamangs are apparently active here until the mid morning (this is what I am hoping to do, but it would probably be more convenient to stay overnight if you have the time).

I hope this is of some help,
    Ben

When we were there the Siamang were directly outside our room for two days and we could watch them from our room in the Castle. There was a large fruiting tree at that point of the resort they were feasting on. And the above is correct, they were not feeding at any particular time when we were there. We went once with no luck and then exchanged numbers with the manager who was very helpful and called us when they showed. When they show they were throw out some fruit for them but no scheduled event. We had our own car so transport was a non issue for us but I would recommend renting your own car in KL if possible – makes things so much easier. Otherwise I am not sure if you can arrange a ride there or not. Considering this is Asia, I would assume you can but I’ve never tried…. Good hunting!
