Taiwan
I recently spent several days in Taiwan. It was a birding FAM trip, so there wasn’t loads of time for mammals, but I thought brief notes may be of interest …
Taiwan Red-and-white Giant Flying Squirrels were common in Dasyueshan and showed well in and around Anmashan Lodge. Two Taiwan Serows were located along the road near the lodge entrance one night too; Formosan Rock Macaques were seen at scattered locations in Dasyueshan (including the lodge grounds). Perny’s Long-nosed Squirrel were few and far between and apparently are being outcompeted by Pallas’s Squirrel, which is increasing in higher elevation locales. In Taroko NP, mega views of two Yellow-throated Martens were had at the Hehuanshan Lookout car park (this seems to be a reliable site per previous trip reports). I also saw what was presumably a Taiwan Vole.
I highly recommend Kuan-Chieh Hung (also known as Chuck) for anyone visiting and seeking a guide, a phenomenal birder but who also knows where the key mammals are. His website is taiwanbirdguide.com.
