The Weekly Recap
Hello mammalwatchers and welcome back to the weekly recap! This recap will be the last catch up one, and is of posts from January 6-11 🙂
The first trip report of the week was Venkat’s summer road trip across Mexico – he saw 48 great species including Durango Chipmunks (unlike the Eastern Chipmunk, these ones can sing without autotune…), Nelson’s Kangaroo Rat and Desert Spotted Skunk.
Next is Ben Balmford’s report from a “work” trip to Bolivia (it would seem he has the same idea of work as my father) where he saw Brazilian Porcupine, Brazilian Pink Dolphin, Azara’s Night Monkey and 39 other cool species:)
Coke Smith’s report from his trip to Sichuan (with my dad, poor thing) is a great read. Their main target was the Chinese Red Panda (which they found! so cute) but also saw other great things like Tibetan Wolf, Mainland Leopard Cat, Tibetan Macaque, Chinese Ferret Badger and as usual the report has some stunning photos.
Next is Lennart Verheuvel’s trip to Estonia last February, during which he saw Eurasian Lynx, Pine Marten and Western Polecat. I especially love the cover photo – it looks like the Lynx is mockingly smirking at the camera and the mammalwatchers behind it…
This report by Mike Gordon and Shavez Cheema is of a trip to Brunei where they saw Leopard Cat, Slow Loris, Binturong and many more despite it only covering 2 night drives.
Paul Carter has posted some links to recents reports of his here if you would like to check them out! They include Vietnam, South Africa and Peru. He also found an Egyptian Slit-faced Bat in Oman, possibly the most eastern sighting of the species – check out the report here.
Finally, the last trip report was this one from Botswana: 23 species such as Leopards, Cheetahs, Banded Mongoose and Bat-eared Fox.
Clear your calendars, the next Mammalwatching Community Meeting is happening none other than this Saturday (January 18th)!!!!!! 🥳 Make sure to sign up at the link if you’d like to be part of the nomination process for the NUTTER awards. I obviously couldn’t be more thrilled. It’s such a shame I have 23 other meetings to attend that day for that mysterious job I’ve never mentioned. No, that is not a birdwatching book in my pocket, thank you very much.
Royle Safaris have just posted a newsletter listing the trips they are planning for the next couple years, so check it out. If none of these tickle your fancy then check out the join a trip page – although if you’re anything like me, I don’t think any of those will tickle much either…
Someone going to Panama/possibly already in Panama is looking for guide recommendations. It may be too late, but feel free to still make suggestions as it could be helpful to others. Someone else would like some guide recommendations for seeing Silvered Leaf Langur on a day trip to Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur.
Jacob Zinn is asking for tips on mammalwatching in Utah in the winter.
A mysterious cat is in need of identification: possibly a very lightly coloured Northern Leopard Cat spotted in Hokkaido? Check out this post to see for yourself.

Thanks for reading:)
