Book review: Illustrated Checklist to Neotropical Primates from Lynx and re:wild
I just received a copy, hot off the presses, of the latest in the Lynx Illustrated Checklist series. Their new book in Neotropical Primates is, like their Madagascar checklist, sponsored by our friends at re:wild.
This compact – 140 page – field guide is a must for anyone visiting the Neotropics to look for primates.
Each species is accompanied by the beautiful illustration from the original Lynx illustrated checklist two volume set, along with a detailed range map, ID pointers and habitat notes.
It is based on the very latest taxonomy and includes all 192 primate species currently known from the region, 13 species more than were known just 10 years ago. In the fast evolving world of primate taxonomy it is super useful to have this information to hand in a format which is small enough to carry with you on a trip so you can know what you are looking at in real time.
Along with the species information there is a a 35 page introduction that covers taxonomy, the different major habitat biomes, along with information on conservation and unsurprisingly – given Russ Mittermeier was one of the main authors – a piece on the benefits of primate watching for conservation. Great stuff.
An excellent book which would make the perfect stocking stuffer.
It is available direct from the publishers Lynx via this link Neotropical Primates – Lynx Nature Books

I would be very interested in seeing where some of these authors fall on the mammal list rankings, especially Russ’ primate life list. Please encourage them to add them!!
