RFI – Collared Pika near Anchorage

Hi all,

My wife and I will be in Anchorage, AK for a couple nights in mid-September. I am hoping to find a Collared Pika or two. I’ve carefully reviewed all the great AK reports on here (of course!), but I don’t think we’ll be able to get to some if the areas identified as good for Pika, and we’ll be limited to the Chugach State Park area. Does anyone have any recommendations for Anchorage-area sites for pika? I’m also considering hiring a local guide for a morning or full day, so any recommendations for guides or companies would be appreciated. Thanks,

Jeff

Take this with a grain of salt since it was June 2009, but we found Collared Pika in the vicinity of Flattop Mountain, which is within the state park. It looks like there have been several sightings in that area this year on iNaturalist, too.

Thanks. I’ve been looking at iNat as well and that Flattop area seems like the best shot. There or Crow Creek closer to Girdwood – less iNat records but closer to the trailhead, which could be helpful to this Prairie flatlander!

I was told they can be seen at Glen Alps but was told usually 4-5 miles in. I found them at Denali but that’s super far away. It was too cold when I was there to get up into hatchers pass and look for them. if you end up at hatchers pass ask about weasals and pine marten visiting the lodge feeders

Thanks! We have limited time so I think Hatcher Pass will encounter out. And Denali will be a future trip. Glen Alps/Flattop does seem like my best option, or Crow Creek where there are some iNat records closer to the trailhead.
