Iberian lynx in maps and charts, plus other mammal tips

Many reports have been written regarding the lynxes in Andújar. I therefore would like to do this a bit different. In the maps and charts you’ll see how and where to best go if you want to maximise your chances.

Hi Daan, Lovely and clear to read report! Congrats on the four sightings! How do you like the phone attachment bat detector you’re using? I’ve seen them, but never had the opportunity to talk to someone that actually used them. Do you prefer it over an stand alone bat detector? Aren’t you worried the app won’t work anymore at some point?

    Kind regards,
    Jonatan

      Hi Jonatan,
There are pro’s and con’s regarding a phone attachment bat detector. Overall I am very satisfied with the EchoMeter, although I did (and still do) need more time to understand all the features and use it correctly. The small size, the recording abilities, and the identification suggestions are all very convenient. I am not worried about the app, though perhaps that is naive? When listening for ultrasonic grasshoppers I found out that that works much better with a “traditional” device, as these sounds were picked up much faster by my fellow searchers with other bat detectors. I do not know if this is because of the device or because of my inexperience with the settings of my own though.

Thanks for the detailed report Daan!
I will definitely print it out and use it when I’m there. This is excellent info!

By the way the insights in the report are not just based on our own experiences, but also greatly on the similar experiences my friends Jacob Lotz (halfway February 2023) and Ruben Vermeer (halfway March 2023) have told me. They were succesful with the lynxes too, so certainly not to worry when you do not plan on going in December or January!

Agree with everyone else about how useful this is! Also amazing to read how much it has changed. I was there 15+ years ago and don’t remember seeing anyone else looking.

Yes the amount of lynx enthousiasts is crazy. I suspect the amount of people searching there on the weekend days could accumulate to 100+! Normally I would have been put off by this, but the atmosphere was actually very good and it was not bothering me very much. I think it is a positive thing, as people stayed on the road and none of the animal species seemed to care much about it.

Its great for the species too I hope – I wonder whether the Lynxes would be doing so well if there wasn’t so much interest (and Euros) attached to them

I am just back from an area slightly North of the area Daan describes (in La Mancha), on a private reserve with Lynx Hides. Got a few nice close ups. Will try to post something soon.

I never finished the report, but we were there in November 2021, saw no lynx – but in the “area 3”, we saw Garden Dormouse next to the road in a tree.

That is ashame to hear Jan. You are definitely not the only one to miss it though! I have heard stories of remarkably many people that have tried fruitlessly. It was for me the reason to go in January and not in March, even though there are many more other interesting insects and birds at that time of year

Oh there is no shame, the place is brilliant, I’ll happily go there again. My friend lives in Granada, always a good excuse to visit.
