Trip Report – Western Sahara Mammalwatching Tour – Royle Safaris – February 2023

Royle Safaris ran two mammalwatching tours in spring 2023 to the Western Sahara, both were successful and this is the trip report from the first tour. The second will be posted in due course. This first trip saw many fennec foxes as well as a wonderful Libyan striped polecat, but we did miss the sand cat (the second trip had great sand cat – but not Libyan striped weasel).

This trip saw 13 or 14 species of mammals (there was a mystery fox at the limit of the spotlight which disappeared to fast for us to ID it as a confirmed Ruppell’s fox (although I suspect it was Ruppell’s or another fennec).

We will be running at least one trip in spring 2024 and we are looking to get dates confirmed in the coming week or so. We are currently looking at the same itinerary as is detailed on the trip report to be lead by Martin Royle along with local guides. The dates we are looking at are 12-19 March 2024. If you would like to join the trip and search for fennec foxes, sand cats, Libyan striped polecats and many other species then please get in touch (info@royle-safaris.co.uk) for more info.
