In search of the Striped Possum

The striped possum is an unusual marsupial found both in New Guinea and in rainforest in northern Queensland, Australia. I took the opportunity of a family trip to Mission Beach to spend a night at Chambers Rainforest Lodge in the hope of seeing one.

Congratulations Michael on your Striped Possum, they are one of my favourite marsupials. I remember going to Kingfisher Park in FNQ 20+ years ago to try to see one and arriving to hear that a raptor had taken one out of a tree that very afternoon. I was crushed… but happily for me – and the possums – there was at least one other left for me to see!

Thanks Michael. We also stayed at Chambers Wildlife Lodge for striped possum (in August, 2022). We had wonderful views of two different individuals, and yes, the gliders and bandicoots too. (I agree – I was also surprised at how large the striped possums were). We also enjoyed observing the musky rat kangaroos rummaging below our cabin at dusk. We went to Nerada tea planation later arvo and saw no Lumholtz tree kangaroos. There were a fair few other people around. We decided to go back early the next morning. (8am). There was no one else there andwe were very happy to see two tree kangaroos in the trees just outside the tea plantation property. I dont nkow how they survive there, its a slim pieces of forest.
