good site for bobcat

I found a good site for bobcats in northern Louisiana. It is called Black Bayou Lake NWR. A friend who works there says that the refuge employees see bobcats at least weekly without even looking, and that bobcats, not raccoons, are the main predators of turtle nests there. I spent one afternoon at the refuge and, indeed, saw a bobcat. The refuge is open from dusk till dawn. Try the road to the observation tower/photo blind, and particularly the road to “art project” near the entrance (you have to look down the road to see the sign). They also have some good golden mouse habitat, and a patch of prairie that looks good for harvest mice. The place is very close to the city of Monroe, so avoid weekends.

Thank you for this, as I have some UK friends who will be glad to hear about the site. I think there’s a typo in the narration here, just a reversal on the times for the refuge — not dusk to dawn, but dawn to dusk. In other words, no night driving.

Here’s what the refuge website says:

“The refuge lands and waters are open year-round, from dawn to dusk.

    Visitor Center Hours

    Monday – Friday — 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
    Saturday — 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    Sunday — 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The refuge Visitor Center is closed on all federal holidays.

There are no admission fees, however a $2 fee is required to launch boats on the lake.”
