I visited PNG in 2013 and West Papua in 2019. All I can say is that New Guinea is extremely frustrating for mammal watching. Not only there are all the problems with remoteness, poor infrastructure, political stability and climate magnified to the extreme. Not only there is a general lack of large mammals in the region. On top of this, all mammals and most large birds are intensively hunted for the pot by the general population. Therefore they are extinct or extremely shy in any place where a Westerner is likely to get. The situation is slightly better in Raja Ampat islands, where the local population have fish to eat. About the birds, my summary is ‘best birds in the world and the worst bird watching in the world’. Sorry to disappoint anybody, I hope you will miraculously have a better impression.
