New Zealand: unverified tips
I just spent 5 days in and around Auckland, New Zealand. Didn’t see any mammals except European rabbits, but here are a few tips I got. I hope to check them out someday.
1. Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari (www.awads.co.nz/) supposedly get Bryde’s whales on half of their trips. Other commonly seen spp. are common and bottlenose dolphins and humpback whales.
2. The southern end of Falls Rd. in Cascades Kauri Park (www.arkinthepark.org.nz/) is said to be a good place to see long-tailed bats on summer evenings. The gates close at 9 so you might have to walk the last kilometer or two.
3. Manikau Heads Lighthouse is reportedly a good place to look for Maui’s dolphins in the surf. The dolphins (and fur seals) are also sometimes seen from the viewpoints at Murawai Gannet Colony, but we weren’t that lucky.
