Canid systematics

My overview of Canis systematics just got published.
Unfortunately, it became a bit outdated since being accepted last February, and they didn’t send me the proofs, so I couldn’t include the references to two recent papers (Drake et al., Scientific Reports 5:8299, and Skoglund et al., Current Biology 25:1-5). These papers show that dog domestication is much more recent than often claimed, and that dog skulls occasionally found at Pleistocene archaeological sites likely belong to wild animals. That basically confirms that the ancestor of the domestic dog became a species separate from the gray wolf long before being domesticated.
