Leopards in protected areas in West-Africa
Dear all,
I am currently working on a study regarding the distribution of the leopard (Panthera pardus) in Africa and I would like to ask you if you have got any information on its occurrence in protected areas especially in Ghana or other parts of West Africa?
Thank you for your support,
Peter

There was an captive local, orphaned leopard in Niokolo Koba nat. park in 2007
In the Gambia locals said they are still around, one was even seen in Abuko, I think about ten years ago or something, al small reserve in the west of the Gambia.Regards, Jeroen Verhoeff

Hi Peter,
The head guide of Mole NP in North Ghana, Zack, will be the most knowledgeable man about the large mammal fauna of the park. He lacks resources to do good research but knows a lot because he lives in the park since he was a kid. I remember it was hard to get in touch with Mole NP. Maybe you can contact him by leaving a message to one of the countries birdguides. Like Kalu Afasi or David Daramani (David lived 28 years in Mole). They know Zack very well. Kalu runs malimbetours.com. I’m not sure but I think Zack told me that Lions were extinct in Mole but Leopard are present.
Good luck, Maurice Tijm

Hi.
In dec 2007 I was in Niokolo Koba nat park in Senegal. They had a captive leopard there that was said to be a local orphaned one. I have pictures of it. In the Gambia locals said there were still leopards around. About ten years ago (I think) there was even a leopard seen in Abuko, a very small reserve in the west of Gambia.
